Abia State Assembly Marks Legislative Milestone with 37 Bills Passed in Two Years

The Abia State House of Assembly has announced the passage of 37 bills within the last two years, highlighting what lawmakers describe as a period of “robust and people-focused” legislation aimed at deepening governance and improving the lives of citizens.

Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, disclosed the achievement during a plenary session in Umuahia on Monday, as part of events marking the Assembly’s second anniversary since its inauguration in June 2023.

According to Emeruwa, the legislative output reflects the House’s commitment to effective lawmaking, oversight, and representation. He noted that the bills cover a wide range of sectors including education, health, security, infrastructure, and public finance.

“Our priority has always been to make laws that directly impact the lives of our people and support the policy direction of the executive for sustainable development,” the Speaker said. “We have worked tirelessly, across party lines, to deliver results.”

Some of the key legislations passed include the Abia State Security Trust Fund Bill, the Primary Health Care Development Agency Law, and the Fiscal Responsibility (Amendment) Bill. Several motions addressing rural electrification, road rehabilitation, and public sector reforms were also adopted.

Political observers and civil society groups have commended the Assembly’s legislative productivity, describing it as a significant departure from past sessions often marred by political infighting and low output.

However, calls have also been made for stronger implementation of the laws passed and increased engagement with constituents to ensure inclusiveness and transparency.

The Speaker assured that the legislature will continue to prioritize accountability and legislative activism as it enters the second half of its tenure.
