Agbakoba Stresses Inevitability of President-Elect’s May 29 Inauguration

In response to calls for the postponement of President-elect Bola Tinubu’s swearing-in ceremony on May 29, former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Olisa Agbakoba, has emphasized that there is no constitutional provision to delay the inauguration.

The requests to halt the swearing-in ceremony gained momentum following Bola Tinubu’s victory in the presidential election held on February 25. Both Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, and Peter Obi of the Labour Party, have approached the court to challenge the election outcome.

However, Agbakoba asserted that the swearing-in of Bola Tinubu as president would proceed as scheduled.

“It is crucial to emphasize that the inauguration of Mr. Bola Tinubu on May 29, 2023, will take place in accordance with our constitutional process,” Agbakoba stated.

“While the election tribunal addresses the petitions, there is no constitutional provision to delay the inauguration on May 29.”

Agbakoba further elaborated on the constitutional framework surrounding presidential inaugurations, emphasizing that the established process must be respected. He emphasized that until any legal challenges to the election outcome are addressed and resolved by the appropriate authorities, the inauguration of the president-elect should proceed according to the constitutional timeline.

The senior advocate’s remarks come in the midst of heightened political tension and legal battles surrounding the election results. However, Agbakoba’s statement serves as a reminder that the constitutional process should be adhered to, ensuring the smooth transition of power and upholding the democratic principles of the nation.

As the legal proceedings unfold, all parties involved are urged to respect the rule of law and allow the courts to handle the petitions filed in relation to the election. This commitment to due process and the constitution will help maintain the stability and integrity of the democratic system in Nigeria.

The eyes of the nation are now focused on the election tribunal as it takes up the task of addressing the petitions and resolving any electoral disputes. The outcome of these legal proceedings will have significant implications for the political landscape of the country and the future of the presidency.

In the midst of these developments, the constitutional process remains the guiding principle. The inauguration ceremony on May 29 is a vital step in ensuring the continuity of democratic governance and the peaceful transfer of power. It is a symbol of the nation’s commitment to upholding democratic values and the will of the people.

As the nation awaits the inauguration day, it is expected that all parties involved will respect the constitutional process and allow the legal system to run its course. The focus should be on upholding the principles of justice, fairness, and transparency to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy and foster unity among its citizens.

The coming days will provide crucial insights into the resolution of the election disputes and the subsequent inauguration of the president-elect. Nigerians across the country are eagerly anticipating the peaceful transfer of power and the beginning of a new era under the elected leadership.
