Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), expressed deep apprehension during a meeting with the National Executive Committee of the Inter-Party Advisory Council Nigeria (IPAC). Atiku decried the actions of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), warning that it is steering Nigeria towards a one-party dictatorship.
At the gathering, Atiku underscored the imperative of safeguarding democracy in the country. He called on IPAC, led by Yabagi Sani, to unite opposition parties to counteract the perceived threat posed by the APC’s trajectory towards a one-party system.
Atiku also criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission (@inecnigeria) for overseeing what he termed as poorly conducted elections, highlighting discrepancies in voter numbers. Furthermore, he urged the National Assembly to prioritize constitutional and electoral reforms, specifically advocating for electronic voting reforms. Atiku believes that transparent elections are vital for protecting democracy.
In concluding his remarks, Atiku affirmed his commitment to collaborating with others in preserving democracy in Nigeria, asserting that despite its flaws, democracy remains the best form of government. -AA
