Osita Chidoka, a former Minister of Aviation, has expressed approval for the decision to implement the Steven Oronsaye report, describing it as a positive step. However, he has raised concerns about potential job losses resulting from the implementation.
President Bola Tinubu recently directed the restructuring of Federal Government parastatals, departments, commissions, and agencies based on the Oronsaye report, aimed at addressing economic challenges. Despite assurances from the Federal Government about no job losses, fears persist.
Chidoka, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), commended the move but questioned the impact on individuals affected by the report’s implementation. Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, he emphasized the need for evidence-based data on the numbers involved and the savings expected from the process.
Highlighting the economic context during the report’s introduction after the 2008 crisis, Chidoka urged a thorough examination of the implications. He stated, “If people have to go, it is something we have to think through. What is important is: how much are we going to be saving with this process? Let’s put some numbers to it. And when we put those numbers, let’s also put the numbers of those who we are transitioning out of these jobs.”
The directive to implement the Oronsaye report has prompted reactions from various quarters. Human rights lawyer Femi Falana questioned its relevance, asserting it would not reduce the cost of governance. Additionally, the House of Representatives urged a comprehensive review of the report before implementation, aligning with sentiments expressed by Falana. The lawmakers urged Tinubu to consider implementable alternatives in line with current realities, minimizing unintended consequences.
