Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly are seeking clarification on the identities of five cabinet nominees presented by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for confirmation.
Upon receiving a letter from the governor, urging the screening and confirmation of six new nominees for cabinet positions, the Assembly raised concerns about the lack of disclosure of the names of the special adviser nominees. During a session chaired by Speaker Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, House Clerk Barr. Olalekan Onafeko read the governor’s letter, which specified Mr. Abiodun Ogunleye as the commissioner-nominee but omitted the identities of the special adviser nominees.
Recognizing this omission, Speaker Obasa and lawmakers agreed to send the letter back to the governor, requesting the names of the remaining nominees to be included.
Highlighting the importance of transparency, Obasa stated, “It is necessary for us to know who and who would become part of the cabinet.”
Deputy Majority Leader Hon. Adedamola Richard Kasunmu observed that the letter deviated from the customary procedure of revealing the identities of all nominees, describing the process as potentially circumventing transparency. His concerns were echoed by colleagues, including Hon. Ladi Ajomale and Hon. Owolabi Ajani, who emphasized the need for clarity in the nomination process. Ajomale noted that previous lists from the governor provided details of nominees, facilitating the screening process.
