Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State is under fire from the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) over his recent trip to the United States to attend the white wedding of his nephew and global music star, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido.
The governor, according to his media aide Rasheed Olawale, travelled via a private jet to Miami, Florida, to celebrate with the Adeleke family as Davido formalises his union with longtime partner Chioma Avril Rowland.
Davido had earlier confirmed the August 2025 Miami ceremony in an interview on The Breakfast Club, which aired on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.
Responding to criticisms, Olawale defended the trip, noting that Governor Adeleke has not taken an official vacation since assuming office in November 2022.
“Governor Adeleke left Nigeria for the United States a few days ago for the wedding of the global music icon, his beloved nephew, David Adeleke,” the statement read. “His Excellency is extending an invitation to the opposition party to attend the event and share in the joy of the occasion with the Adeleke family. Those unable to attend may join virtually.”
The aide further clarified that the trip is brief and that the governor remains in constant communication with his deputy, Prince Kola Adewusi, who is overseeing the affairs of the state during his absence.
APC Raises Alarm
However, the Osun APC has described Adeleke’s absence as “abnormal,” accusing the governor of leaving the state without formally notifying citizens or transferring power to his deputy, as required by the constitution.
In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Kola Olabisi, the party questioned the transparency surrounding Adeleke’s departure.
“The question being asked in hushed tones in public places, inside commercial buses and among motorcycle riders is: where is our governor?” the statement said. “As the governor of all and sundry, we need to know who is holding fort in his absence. Did he duly transmit power to his deputy who is constitutionally empowered to act in his place?”
The controversy comes at a sensitive time as residents continue to debate the balance between public service and personal commitments for elected officials.
