African Nurses and Midwives Unveil Global AI Empowerment Movement for Migrant Women

Professor Khadijat Toyin Musah

A historic global campaign has been launched by African nurses and midwives to bridge the gender gap in artificial intelligence (AI) and empower women across borders through digital literacy.

The initiative, titled “Leave No Woman Behind: Global AI Literacy and Empowerment Campaign,” was announced ahead of International Migrants Day on December 18, 2025, and marks the first worldwide movement dedicated to integrating women, nurses, and girls into the fast-growing AI ecosystem.

Jointly spearheaded by TechNurses Africa and the Global Institute of Nurses, Midwives and Allied Health Professionals (GiNMAHP), the five-year campaign seeks to train and mentor one million women globally by 2030 equipping them with skills and confidence to thrive in the digital economy.

Redefining Migration Through Technology

Described as a first-of-its-kind collaboration, the campaign aims to transform the traditional idea of migration from one defined by physical borders to one driven by digital capability and opportunity.

“AI must not become another tool of exclusion. It must be the new language of inclusion,” said Professor Khadijat Toyin Musah, Founder and Executive Director of GiNMAHP and Co-Convener of the initiative. “These numbers are not just statistics; they are barriers waiting to be broken.”

Professor Musah’s comments reflect global data showing that women remain underrepresented in technology. According to the World Economic Forum (2023), 44 percent of core job skills are expected to change by 2027 due to AI. Yet UNESCO (2021) reports that only 22 percent of AI professionals worldwide are women, while in Sub-Saharan Africa, women hold just 20 to 30 percent of tech jobs.

In the healthcare sector, despite women constituting 90 percent of nurses and midwives, fewer than 3 percent hold leadership positions in digital health.

Building a New Kind of Migration

For the first time, nurses, midwives, educators, and female professionals from non-tech sectors are coming together with male allies and AI experts to co-create inclusive technological solutions.

“Migration is no longer about visas; it’s about having globally relevant digital skills,” said Josiah-Jackson Okesola (JayJay), Co-Founder of TechNurses Africa and Co-Convener of the campaign. “We are creating a new kind of migration a digital migration, where women cross borders through knowledge, not air tickets.”

A Global Launch for a Global Cause

The official virtual launch on December 18 will bring together international leaders, AI experts, policymakers, and innovators for a three-day summit and training bootcamp.

Highlights of the launch include:

  • Keynote addresses by global champions of AI and gender equity.
  • Storytelling sessions featuring migrant innovators.
  • A policy-to-practice panel linking governments and industry.
  • The unveiling of the World’s First AI Innovation Hub for Migrant Nurses and Women.

The initiative will also roll out regional AI bootcamps, mentorship programmes, and community-driven innovation projects designed to support women-led solutions in healthcare, education, and entrepreneurship.

Partnerships for Progress

Organisers are calling for collaboration from governments, universities, NGOs, and private sector partners to advance gender equality and ethical AI adoption. The campaign supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals (4, 5, 8, 9, 10, and 17) and aligns with the World Health Organization’s Global Strategy on Digital Health (2020–2025).

“Empowering women with AI literacy is not charity; it is economic justice,” Professor Musah said. “When women understand and build technology, nations become smarter, healthier, and more equal.”

About the Organisers

TechNurses Africa is a Pan-African initiative dedicated to empowering nurses, midwives, and women in healthcare to lead digital transformation through AI and technology innovation.

GiNMAHP (Global Institute of Nurses, Midwives and Allied Health Professionals) connects global health professionals and diaspora networks to advance research, leadership, and gender equity in health systems.

Together, the two organisations are pioneering a global digital movement where African women take the lead in shaping the future of artificial intelligence and migration.
