APGA Governorship Candidate Condemns Impeachment Notice on Edo Deputy Governor

Dr. Isaiah Osifo, the gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Edo State, has strongly criticized the impeachment notice served on Deputy Governor Comrade Phillip Shaibu, describing it as an abuse of power and privilege.

In a brief statement, Osifo, a former council chairman, expressed his dismay over the actions of the state House of Assembly, stating that they have tarnished their reputation by initiating this move.

He stated, “The Edo State House of Assembly, on Wednesday, 6th March 2024, moved a motion and issued a notice of impeachment on the deputy governor of Edo State, Hon. Philip Shuaibu. This course of action by the members of the Edo State House of Assembly is simply an abuse of office and privilege.”

Osifo emphasized that the elected members of the assembly were tasked with defending the constitution, upholding state laws, and representing the interests of their constituents. He argued that the motion for impeachment did not align with these responsibilities.

“The abuse of office and privileges associated with elected and appointed political office holders is a common feature that has frustrated the entrenchment of democratic norms in Nigeria,” Osifo added, highlighting the need for elected officials to prioritize constitutional mandates over personal agendas.

He further criticized the assembly members for supporting what he termed an “odious agenda,” asserting that such actions undermine democracy in the state. Osifo pointed out that while most assembly members are people of conscience, their intentions have been overshadowed by political pressures and the need for survival.

Osifo’s condemnation of the impeachment notice reflects the growing tension within Edo State’s political landscape as stakeholders navigate through power struggles and conflicts.
