Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has advised President Bola Tinubu to adopt the reform strategies employed by Argentina’s President Javier Milei, instead of blaming opposition parties and his predecessor. Atiku, the 2023 presidential candidate of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), emphasized the need for a proactive approach to economic recovery.
In a statement titled “Argentina’s Javier Milei approach to reforms should serve as a lesson for Tinubu,” Atiku highlighted the contrasting economic measures taken by both leaders, who assumed office in 2023 and inherited disoriented economies. Atiku asserted that President Milei successfully revived Argentina’s economy through a comprehensive stabilization plan, emphasizing the importance of leadership-led sacrifice and clear-cut policies.
Atiku criticized Tinubu’s approach, stating that blaming the opposition and the predecessor is counterproductive. He emphasized that market forces respond to actions and inactions, urging Tinubu to learn from President Milei’s successful economic reforms.
The former VP praised President Milei’s commitment to macroeconomic stability and global competitiveness. He noted that Milei implemented measures such as cutting government expenditure, blocking corruption, and attracting foreign direct investment through concessions and improved ease of doing business.
Atiku highlighted the contrast with Tinubu’s administration, criticizing ad hoc and hurriedly implemented reforms without proper review. He urged a more strategic approach to reforms, emphasizing the need for leadership to make sacrifices and reduce government wastage.
Citing specific examples, Atiku pointed out that President Milei runs a lean government, reducing ministries and privatizing state-owned enterprises, while Tinubu increased the number of ministers and spent resources on renovating official residences. Atiku concluded by expressing his willingness to share details of his Recover Nigeria Plan, a strategy aimed at economic recovery, with the current government.
In summary, Atiku called for a departure from blaming others and adopting a comprehensive and strategic approach to reforms, drawing inspiration from successful models like President Milei’s initiatives in Argentina.
