Democracy Day: ADC Blasts Tinubu, Says President Should Accept Failure After Three Years in Office

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has launched a scathing attack on President Bola Tinubu, urging him to acknowledge his administration’s failures rather than continuing to make fresh promises after more than three years in power.

ADC Tears Into Tinubu’s Democracy Day Speech

The opposition party’s broadside was contained in a statement issued on Friday by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, coinciding with Nigeria’s Democracy Day 2026 celebrations.

The ADC accused President Tinubu of delivering a speech that sounded more like that of a political candidate seeking a mandate than a sitting president entering his fourth year in office.

“The president should own his failure. His Democracy Day speech was like that of a candidate seeking another mandate,” the party stated.

According to the ADC, Nigerians were once again asked to believe that “prosperity is just around the corner,” that economic reforms would soon bear fruit, that jobs are coming, and that security is improving — promises the party says have become all too familiar.

Eleven Years of APC Rule Under Scrutiny

The ADC went further, drawing a sharp contrast between the APC’s 2015 campaign promises and the current state of the nation, arguing that the same issues that brought the party to power remain unresolved over a decade later.

“The APC came to power in 2015 promising to tackle insecurity, revive the economy, create jobs, reduce poverty, strengthen institutions, and improve the quality of life of Nigerians. Eleven years later, these same issues continue to dominate the government’s speeches,” the party said.

The ADC argued that the President still repeating many of the same promises that defined the APC’s rise to power is itself an implicit admission that those promises remain unfulfilled.

“The question Nigerians should be asking is simple: after three years of President Tinubu and eleven years of APC rule, why are we still talking about promises?” the statement read.

National Assembly Also Criticised

Beyond the presidency, the ADC also took aim at the National Assembly, blasting lawmakers for going on recess on Democracy Day — a decision the party described as tone-deaf and disrespectful to Nigeria’s democratic values and the citizens the legislature is meant to serve.

Opposition Pressure Mounts Ahead of 2027

The ADC’s sharp criticism reflects growing opposition pressure on the Tinubu administration as Nigeria edges closer to the 2027 general elections. With multiple parties and voices calling for accountability, the President faces an increasingly difficult task of convincing Nigerians that his administration’s reform agenda is delivering tangible results on the ground.
