Professor Sunday Lengmang, a distinguished family medicine consultant and fistula surgeon, has attributed the high prevalence of Vesico-Vaginal Fistula (VVF) to poverty. In an interview in Taraba State, where he serves as the Project Director of the Evangel VVF Center at Bingham University Teaching Hospital, Lengmang emphasized the urgent need for victims to take advantage of ongoing free surgeries in the state.
As the leader of a team targeting over 560 women and girls, including those with disabilities, Professor Lengmang emphasized the focus on surgical interventions to address VVF and other reproductive health issues in the state. He stated, “Our interest in Taraba and Nigeria as a whole is to improve the health of women and girls, especially those in their reproductive age, with a particular concern for those experiencing female genital fistula.”
Highlighting the profound impact of poverty on the prevalence of fistula in the state, Lengmang stressed, “The root cause of fistula is poverty because it is poverty that makes women not deliver in the hospital.” This perspective underscores the critical need to bring healthcare services closer to the people, addressing the socio-economic factors contributing to VVF cases.
