The Federal Government of Nigeria has embarked on the construction of the 700km Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the maintenance of critical bridges in Lagos. Nweze David Umahi, the Minister of Works, emphasized during the first phase’s handover that the government would not tolerate variations resulting from delays or slow progress once mobilization has been initiated.
Spanning nine states with two spurs leading to the Northern States, the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project’s initial phase involves the construction of a 47.47-kilometer dual carriageway in concrete pavement. The contract for this phase has been awarded to Hitech Construction Company Ltd. The minister, accompanied by Engr. O. I. Kesha, the Federal Ministry of Works’ controller for Lagos State, stressed the importance of timely project delivery by contractors.
Special Adviser to the Minister, Orji Uchenna, commended Hitech Construction Company Nigeria Ltd for the quality and expeditious execution of the project. Uchenna highlighted the progress made by the company in filling 1.3 kilometers of the awarded section within a short period.
The minister also visited various project sites, including Queen’s Drive Ikoyi, the top deck of the Third Mainland Bridge, the underwater sections, Eddo Bridge, and Carter Bridge. He expressed the federal government’s commitment to undertaking comprehensive rehabilitation of these critical bridges, vital links connecting the mainland and island areas of Lagos. The repairs will encompass both the top and under-bridge works.
Regarding the Third Mainland Bridge, the minister outlined the critical elements for rehabilitation, including the deck, ramps, and dual carriageway, which spans about 11 kilometers. CCECC has been involved in this project, with ongoing efforts to conclude asphalt milling and reasphalting before the end of March.
