Gombe State Independent Electoral Commission Sets April 27, 2024, for Local Elections

In a recent announcement, the Gombe State Independent Electoral Commission (GOSIEC) has fixed April 27, 2024, as the date for chairmanship and councillorship elections across the state’s 11 local government areas and 114 wards.

Sa’idu Shehu Awak, the commission’s chairman, revealed this information during a meeting with political party leaders and election stakeholders. The commission has given political parties a 101-day notice to prepare and nominate their candidates for the upcoming elections.

Awak urged all political parties to conduct their primaries within the provided timeframe and called on their leadership to promote law-abiding and respectful conduct among members and supporters during the election process.

It’s noteworthy that the state had organized local government council polls only once in the last four years, with caretaker committees overseeing the councils since the initial election. Notably, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), a major opposition party in the state, was notably absent from the meeting.
