Armed men on Monday morning attacked a bank customer and injured a police officer in a daylight robbery in the Osuntokun area of Ibadan North Local Government Area, Oyo State.

Eyewitnesses told PUNCH Metro that the victim had just made a withdrawal from a commercial bank before being trailed and ambushed by the gunmen.

An eyewitness, who declined to be named, said the assailants dispossessed the victim of a large sum of money before fleeing the scene.

“The unsuspecting victim was forcibly dispossessed of a substantial amount of money by the suspected gunmen. A police officer who was on a routine patrol was also severely injured during the raid,” the eyewitness said.

Confirming the incident in a statement, the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, said the robbery occurred at about 8:00 a.m. on Secretariat Road, Agodi, Ibadan.

“A bank depositor travelling in a metallic grey Nissan Primera with plate number EPE 901 PS was tracked and forcibly robbed of a substantial, yet-to-be-ascertained amount of cash,” Osifeso stated.

He added that a police officer sustained serious injuries when his patrol team confronted the gunmen in an attempt to stop their operation.

“Initial investigations indicate that an officer associated with the state police command sustained severe injuries during a confrontation that arose when his team on patrol engaged the suspects in a bid to thwart their further plans of causing chaos following the attack on the unsuspecting individual,” the statement read.

Osifeso confirmed that no deaths were recorded and that the injured officer was receiving treatment in a secure medical facility.

“Fortunately, there have been no reported fatalities, and the injured officer is currently receiving immediate medical attention,” he said.

The police spokesperson urged residents to provide useful information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrators.

“We assure the public that an extensive investigation is underway, and updates will be communicated as they become available,” he added.
