The Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, has announced the suspension of its strike, which began on October 25.
This decision follows a 15-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government on October 10, demanding action on unresolved welfare issues. Workers resumed their duties on Friday morning.
The seven-day warning strike aimed to advocate for several key demands, including the adjustment of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure to match the adjustments made to the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure since January 2, 2014. Additional demands included the implementation of a consultant cadre for pharmacists in federal health institutions, an increase in the retirement age from 60 to 65 for health workers and 70 for consultants, and the payment of outstanding salaries owed to JOHESU members in professional regulatory councils.
JOHESU UCH Chairman, Mr. Oladayo Olabampe, informed the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the strike was suspended following a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the JOHESU national leadership and the Federal Government.
“The Federal Government has requested a maximum of six weeks from October 31 to address our demands,” he stated. “In light of this MoU, the JOHESU National Executive Council has resolved to suspend the strike.”
Olabampe emphasized that if the demands are not met within the stipulated timeframe, the unions may consider an indefinite strike.
