Keyamo Tenders Apology to Senate for Past Actions

Festus Keyamo, the ministerial nominee from Delta State, has extended a formal apology to the Senate regarding his prior non-appearance before the 9th National Assembly during his tenure as Minister of State for Labour and Productivity in the preceding administration.

Recalling the events, during the ministerial screening process on Monday, the Senate was gripped by a heated debate as Festus Keyamo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), underwent examination for his appointment as Minister.

The commotion was ignited by Senator Darlington Nwokocha (LP – Abia Central), who presented a constitutional point of order and motion. Nwokocha urged a deferment of Keyamo’s screening due to his previous conduct towards the National Assembly during his time as Minister. Nwokocha accused Keyamo of displaying disregard for the 9th National Assembly and leveling allegations of corruption against the previous administration.

Nwokocha alleged that Keyamo was summoned to provide clarification regarding a Special Public Works program during his tenure, but he did not honor the invitation.

Subsequently, following the tumultuous screening session, the Senate convened an executive session to deliberate on the issue. Upon reconvening, a contrite Festus Keyamo tendered his sincere apologies for his past actions, expressing regret for his behavior.

In response, the Senate allowed him to take a bow and exit after accepting his apology. The incident underscores the significance of parliamentary accountability and civility within the context of the legislative process.
