The Lagos State Police Command says it has recorded a noticeable decline in violent crime across the state, crediting the improvement to stronger community–police cooperation, strategic deployments, and a sustained statewide security operation.
Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, disclosed this on Monday during a press briefing at the command headquarters in Ikeja.
Jimoh assured residents that Lagos remains “safe and secure” as the state prepares for the annual “Detty December” festivities and increased end-of-year travel. He praised community groups, institutions, and members of the public for their continued collaboration with the police, describing their support as central to the state’s improved security landscape.
The commissioner noted that the command has intensified operations under the special ’ember’ security mode, which runs from September to December each year.
“Since the start of the ’ember’ mode, we have not recorded any significant security breach,” Jimoh said. “This success is due to the collaboration between the community and the police.”
He explained that the visible heavy police presence in many parts of the state including roads, neighbourhoods, and known hotspots should not cause concern, but is part of proactive steps to maintain the current stability.
The command has activated additional patrols, stop-and-search points, rapid response units, and temporary security posts to boost visibility and quick intervention capacity.
Jimoh urged residents not to cancel travel plans out of fear, assuring them that their families and properties would remain safe.
“We encourage those travelling out of Lagos to do so freely, knowing that their families and properties are safe. Likewise, those arriving from outside Nigeria should feel confident that Lagos is safe and secure,” he said.
He added that the intensified deployments will continue into the New Year, focusing on markets, worship centres, and other high-traffic public spaces expected to attract large crowds during the festive season.
“Lagos is safe and secure, and we will maintain this level of security so all residents can go about their daily activities without fear,” he concluded.
