Lagos Reassures Residents After Ebute Meta Building Collapse

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) says it remains committed to protecting lives and property following the collapse of a three-storey building in Ebute Meta that has left at least four people dead and six rescued.

Permanent Secretary Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu told reporters on Monday evening that search-and-rescue teams have worked continuously since the incident late Friday and will continue “until the building gets to ground zero.”

“Our priority is the safety of lives,” Oke-Osanyintolu said, noting that investigations are under way, including material testing and other assessments to determine the cause.

Heavy-duty equipment and emergency responders remain on site as officials carefully clear rubble to locate anyone still trapped. LASEMA urged residents to co-operate with building regulations and promptly report unsafe structures, warning that enforcement alone cannot prevent such disasters without community support.

The agency also pledged stricter enforcement of building codes while appealing for public calm to allow rescue operations to proceed smoothly.
