Bayern Munich legend Thomas Müller has pointed to missed opportunities as a key factor in his team’s 4-1 defeat to Barcelona on Wednesday night.
In a post-match statement reported by UEFA.com, the former Germany international expressed disappointment, noting that Bayern’s confidence waned as the game progressed due to the scoreline.
“We had good possession of the ball, so the final score feels a bit misleading,” he remarked. “We must acknowledge that Barcelona is a strong team, and Raphinha had an exceptional night while we squandered key chances.”
The defeat leaves Bayern Munich with just three points from their first three matches in the current Champions League season.
“This isn’t a good feeling at all. We came here to win, but losing 4-1 means there’s a lot of work ahead for us,” Müller added.
He continued, “We may have lacked confidence towards the end because of the score and how the match unfolded. When we analyze the game, it will be clear that Barcelona created more meaningful chances than we did. It felt like we lost our edge, which affected our pressing game.”
Müller emphasized the team’s failure to maintain possession and control, stating, “We didn’t play up to our potential. It’s human to struggle after a loss like this, but bouncing back isn’t easy.”
Barcelona’s impressive performance reflects their strong form under new coach Hansi Flick, as they prepare for El Clásico this weekend in a bid to reclaim the La Liga title from Real Madrid.
Before this match, Barcelona had failed to score against Bayern in their last five encounters and had lost six times to the German giants in the Champions League. However, their performance on Wednesday marked a significant turnaround.
