Peter Obi, the Labour Party candidate in the February 2023 presidential election, has expressed his views on the recent phone call between US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, and President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.
In the call, Blinken emphasized his commitment to strengthening the US-Nigeria relationship with the incoming administration. However, Obi believes that the US should base its responses to Nigeria’s affairs on mutual respect, shared ideals, aspirations, and interests, rather than favoring any individual or party.
Obi highlights the importance of the rule of law and democracy as the fundamental principles of Nigeria’s political system. He suggests that the US should wait for the resolution of ongoing judicial processes before implicitly conferring legitimacy on any party involved.
The former Governor of Anambra State points out the manipulation and falsification of the will of Nigerians during the February 25 elections. He urges true friends and partners of Nigeria, like the United States, to consider these issues and refrain from taking sides.
Obi emphasizes the evolving political and judicial processes surrounding the last presidential election, urging the US to await the full resolution of these processes before making any judgments. He asserts that the determination of the true winner can only be made by the relevant courts of law, considering the alleged violations of both the Nigerian Electoral Law and the Nigerian Constitution.
Through his tweet, Obi calls for a fair and unbiased approach to political developments in Nigeria, and he expects the United States to uphold the values of democracy and respect Nigeria’s internal processes.
