Rashidi Ladoja to Be Crowned 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland September 26

Ibadan, Oyo State – Former Oyo State Governor, Rashidi Ladoja, has been confirmed as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, with his coronation ceremony scheduled for September 26, 2025.

According to Adeola Oloko, Ladoja’s media aide, the coronation will take place at the historic Mapo Hall, Oja-Oba, in Ibadan, the state capital.

The date was agreed upon after Governor Seyi Makinde approved Ladoja’s nomination for the revered throne. The approval followed a meeting between the state government delegation, the Olubadan-designate, and members of the Olubadan Advisory Council.

While the state government is yet to release an official statement, preparations are already underway to ensure a grand occasion befitting the Ibadan monarchy.

A Long Journey to the Throne

Ladoja, who was nominated on August 4 by the Olubadan-in-Council following the death of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin on July 7, expressed mixed feelings over the ascension.

Addressing supporters and well-wishers at his Bodija residence on Tuesday, the Olubadan-designate admitted he did not expect to mount the throne so soon.

“When I heard of Kabiyesi’s (Oba Olakulehin’s) death, it was so painful to me because I told myself that I wasn’t ready. I thought he would reign for maybe five to ten years, but the deed has been done,” he said.

Reflecting on his long journey through Ibadan’s traditional hierarchy, Ladoja recalled being installed as Jagun Balogun on October 1, 1993.

“It has taken me 31 years to reach this position. Many of those who witnessed my installation, including my former deputy Alao-Akala, MKO Abiola, and Lamidi Adedibu, are no longer alive. This shows that my life’s purpose is not yet fully fulfilled,” he added.

From Politics to the Throne

A respected statesman, Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja served as Governor of Oyo State between 2003 and 2007. His elevation to the Olubadan stool marks a rare transition from politics to traditional leadership in Ibadan’s modern history.

With the coronation now fixed, Ibadanland prepares for a historic celebration as one of its most prominent sons ascends the throne of the ancient city.
