Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the Labour Party’s 2023 governorship candidate in Lagos State, has hinted at another bid for the top office in 2027. Speaking in a recent interview on Iyabo Ojo TV, the politician said he has been reflecting on past shortcomings and working to fortify his political base.
Rhodes-Vivour stressed the importance of sustained opposition activity, vowing to break the cycle of post-election dormancy in Lagos politics. “By God’s grace, we are working. We gained a lot of traction, identified our mistakes, and are addressing them. The biggest mistake in Lagos politics has been the opposition going quiet after elections. That is not happening this time,” he stated.
The Labour Party figure also took aim at Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration, criticizing what he described as reckless expenditure during a period of economic hardship.
“For example, we highlighted how Governor Sanwo-Olu allegedly used taxpayers’ money to cover personal legal bills. We also questioned the nearly ₦200 million spent on unspecified projects and the reported ₦2 billion allocation for buying fans and consultants for bus networks,” he said. “In these challenging times, Lagosians deserve accountability and transparency. Public funds must be spent efficiently, and that is the role of the opposition.”
Rhodes-Vivour detailed his party’s ongoing outreach initiatives, which aim to address critical health and welfare challenges across the state. These efforts include micro-health insurance programs offering Lagosians free treatment worth up to ₦6,000.
“We’re staying engaged with the people through health outreaches and initiatives like micro-health insurance. This keeps us connected to their daily struggles while ensuring we stay relevant in the political landscape,” he noted.
As the 2027 elections draw closer, Rhodes-Vivour’s renewed focus on grassroots engagement and transparency signals his readiness to challenge the political status quo in Lagos once again.
