Saraki Calls for Accountability in Tragic Death at Maitama General Hospital, Urges Enforcement of Protective Laws

Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has called on the Ministry of Health to take action against the administration of Maitama General Hospital following the tragic death of Greatness Olorunfemi, who was a victim of a one-chance robbery incident.

Saraki expressed his concern that the hospital’s management allegedly violated the law by refusing to admit Olorunfemi when she urgently needed medical assistance. Olorunfemi was thrown out of a moving vehicle by criminals along the Maitama-Kubwa expressway in Abuja but was later found and taken to Maitama General Hospital. Unfortunately, she passed away as medical personnel reportedly declined to admit her due to a lack of a police report.

In a statement issued by Saraki, he lamented the situation and emphasized the importance of a law designed to protect Nigerians who have suffered from violence, a law that was passed during his tenure as Senate President.

Saraki stated, “I am deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Greatness Olorunfemi, who was forcibly ejected from a moving vehicle by criminals, robbed, and then left in dire need of medical attention, only to be denied admission at Maitama General Hospital in Abuja. This heartbreaking incident underscores the necessity of enforcing the law we enacted to safeguard the rights of victims of violence.”

He went on to call for sanctions against the leadership of Maitama General Hospital for their alleged violation of the law and their refusal to provide essential medical care to someone in dire need. Saraki reminded all healthcare professionals of their core duty to save lives and implored them not to turn away individuals in need of assistance.

Saraki also directed his message to the Nigerian government, urging them to take a firm stance against such injustices and demanding a thorough investigation into the case by the Federal Ministry of Health and its Hospital Management Board. He emphasized the need for swift justice for those responsible.

In addition, Saraki encouraged the public to raise awareness about the existing law and its provisions, aiming to ensure its adherence and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

Lastly, Saraki extended his heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Greatness Olorunfemi, acknowledging the immense loss they have suffered during this challenging period.
