During Tuesday’s plenary, the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, announced the constitution of standing committees in the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly. Notably, Senator Solomon Adeola was appointed as chairman of the Appropriations Committee, while Senator Ahmed Wadada was appointed as chairman of the Public Accounts Committee. Details regarding other Senate committees and their members are expected to be provided at a later time.
Furthermore, Senate President Akpabio disclosed that a letter from President Bola Tinubu had been received, requesting the confirmation of the new service chiefs. While the Senate President did not reveal the date for the screening and confirmation process, he emphasized that the entire Senate would be involved in the assessment of the nominees.
The service chiefs to be screened and confirmed by the Senate include Nuhu Ribadu as the National Security Adviser, Maj. Gen. Christopher Musa as the Chief of Defence Staff, Maj. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja as the Chief of Army Staff, Rear Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla as the Chief of Naval Staff, and AVM Hassan Abubakar as the Chief of Air Staff.
These appointments mark a transition from the security chiefs inherited from former President Muhammadu Buhari, namely retired Maj-Gen Babagana Monguno as the National Security Adviser, General Lucky Irabor as the Chief of Defence Staff, Faruk Yahaya as the Chief of Army Staff, Awwal Gambo as the Chief of Naval Staff, and Isiaka Amao as the Chief of Air Staff.
