Tongeji Island is Nigeria’s, Affirms Governor Abiodun Amidst Benin Republic Speculations

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has asserted that Tongeji Island unequivocally belongs to Nigeria, emphasizing that the Republic of Benin is not in contention for ownership of the oil-rich enclave. The governor made this statement during a courtesy call from Rear Admiral Mustapha Hassan, the Flag Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command, Nigerian Navy.

Governor Abiodun expressed the island’s historical connection to the state and its people, affirming that Tongeji Island has no affiliations with any other country. He mentioned that he had communicated this stance to the President of Benin Republic, and there was mutual agreement that the island was not a subject of dispute.

Acknowledging the security challenges faced by Ogun Waterside, particularly incursions from the Niger Delta, Governor Abiodun highlighted the importance of Naval presence in safeguarding the area, especially as it is earmarked for the state’s seaport. He disclosed plans for the Ogun State Port in the Olokola area and welcomed the reactivation of a multi-billion dollar initiative that would require substantial Navy presence.

Governor Abiodun assured the Nigerian Navy of his administration’s commitment to ensuring the security of residents and infrastructure in the region. Additionally, he pledged to set up a committee to explore further areas of partnership with the Navy.

In response, Rear Admiral Hassan commended Ogun State for its conducive business environment and emphasized the need for the state to work towards becoming an oil-producing state through Tongeji Island. He highlighted the Nigerian Navy’s role in securing the island, safeguarding lives, and protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity. Rear Admiral Hassan appealed to the state government to provide essential facilities such as jetties, healthcare, water supply, and electricity for the island’s inhabitants, suggesting the potential development of Tongeji Island into a tourism center.
