Abuja – The World Bank Group has expressed its intention to collaborate with Nigeria’s Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy to enhance the country’s maritime sector. This announcement was made on Wednesday by Ismail Omipdan, an aide to the minister, following a courtesy visit from a World Bank delegation led by Ms. Lia Sieghart.
During the visit, the discussions centered around the government’s vision for developing a sustainable and integrated blue economy, with a particular focus on sustainable fisheries. Sieghart highlighted the objective of identifying areas where the World Bank could provide its expertise and support.
She commended President Bola Tinubu for the establishment of the ministry, viewing it as a significant indication of the Nigerian government’s commitment to advancing the maritime sector.
In response, Minister Adegboyega Oyetola expressed gratitude for the World Bank’s interest and outlined the steps the ministry is taking to harness Nigeria’s marine and blue economy resources. He emphasized that developing fisheries and aquaculture is the ministry’s top priority.
“Fishery is the flagship of the ministry. We are working to regulate activities in that sector and designate terminals for fishing operations. Our goal is to create a sustainable fishery program that appeals to the youth,” Oyetola stated.
He further noted the ministry’s commitment to reducing fish importation by boosting local production. “We are eager to have your support in realizing our vision for the ministry,” he added.
The collaboration is expected to pave the way for innovative solutions and sustainable practices within Nigeria’s maritime industry, ultimately benefiting the economy and local communities.
