Federal Government Raises Monthly Allowance for Corps Members to N77,000 from July 2024

The Federal Government has approved an increase in the monthly allowance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members to N77,000, effective from July 2024. This decision was confirmed in a statement by Caroline Embu, the Acting Director of Information and Public Relations for NYSC, following a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission dated September 25, 2024.

Prior to this increase, corps members were receiving a monthly allowance of N33,000, a figure that had remained since the minimum wage was raised to N30,000 in 2019. The new adjustment comes after President Bola Tinubu signed the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act into law on July 29, 2024, which established N70,000 as the minimum wage.

In her statement, Embu highlighted that the Director General of NYSC, Brigadier-General Yusha’u Ahmed, had previously visited the Chairman of the Salaries Commission to advocate for improved welfare packages for corps members. The Director General expressed gratitude for the government’s gesture, emphasizing that this increase will not only provide significant relief to the corps members but also enhance their morale, encouraging them to serve the nation with greater dedication.
