Comrade Aisha Yesufu, a prominent activist, has called for the establishment of universally accepted standards for free, fair, and credible elections worldwide. Her plea comes as a proactive measure to prevent the resurgence of military coups in various countries.
Aisha Yesufu emphasized the necessity of having consistent and transparent electoral standards to safeguard democracy. She argued that varying standards of the electoral process could jeopardize the sustainability of democratic systems, ultimately leading to flawed elections and instability.
In a stark warning, Aisha Yesufu stated, “We cannot continue to have different standards, otherwise military coup will become the order of the day.”
Notably, Aisha issued this warning a day before the recent coup in Gabon, clarifying that it was not an anticipation but rather an urgent call for global action. She shared her thoughts through a brief statement on her social media platform, saying:
“The world must find a universally accepted standard for free, fair, and credible elections. We cannot continue to have different standards, otherwise military coup will become the order of the day. I shot this video yesterday, and today we have a coup in Gabon.”
