APC South-South Zone Challenges Obaseki’s Achievements and Blame-Shifting Tactics

The South-South zone of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has issued a challenge to Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, urging him to provide a comprehensive list of his accomplishments since assuming leadership of the state. The party has asserted that Obaseki, who succeeded former president of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Adams Oshiomhole, has failed to showcase tangible achievements during his over seven years in office, instead highlighting the developmental strides of his predecessor.

Blessing Agbomhere, the South-South Zonal Publicity Secretary of the APC, asserted that Obaseki’s accusations and attempts to shift blame for the state of roads and other issues onto the new administration under President Tinubu are an effort to mask his own incompetence.

Obaseki had earlier attributed the deplorable state of federal roads in the state and the resultant hardships faced by the people to the removal of petrol subsidy and the policies of the Federal Government. However, Agbomhere criticized this stance, suggesting that Obaseki is strategically placing blame on the recently inaugurated President Tinubu’s administration for his own failures.

The statement issued by Agbomhere underlined that despite the challenging economic conditions in 2008, with a drop in the state’s monthly revenue to N1.6 billion and an IGR of N30 million, Obaseki’s term has not yielded substantial transformations.

The statement read in part: “Despite taking over office in 2008 when the state’s monthly revenue dropped to N1.6 billion due to the world economic crisis while IGR was N30 million bringing the total to N1.9 billion.

“We therefore challenge the incumbent Governor Obaseki to show to the world what impact he has been able to make rather than the usual promises of Memorandum of Understanding which his government has been notorious for signing with fictitious entities with nothing to show for it.

The APC South-South Zone further called on Obaseki to shift his focus from inciting the people of Edo State against the administration of President Tinubu. The party emphasized that Obaseki should present concrete evidence of his contributions to the state’s development, rather than relying on promises and agreements that have not yielded tangible results.

“We call on Governor Obaseki to desist from inciting the people of Edo State against the administration of President Bola Tinubu. We urge Nigerians to be patient as the process of transformation will soon kick off with the screening and swearing in of cabinet ministers which is expected in the days ahead.”

As Nigerians anticipate the screening and swearing-in of cabinet ministers in the coming days, the statement from the APC South-South Zone indicates that a critical evaluation of Obaseki’s tenure and accountability will be at the forefront of public discourse.
