Balogun Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), a two-time governorship candidate representing the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State, has announced his withdrawal from the upcoming 2024 gubernatorial election in the state.
Jegede, who previously contested as the PDP candidate in both the 2016 and 2020 elections, stated his decision was driven by a commitment to address the party’s challenges rather than exacerbate them. Addressing his supporters in Akure, the state capital, spanning across the 18 local government areas, the PDP stalwart emphasized his dedication to securing victory for the party in the upcoming poll.
“After thorough consultations and considerations, it became evident that we must reassess whether to proceed or take an alternative path that aligns with the prevailing sentiment regarding equitable representation, fairness, and justice, particularly concerning the governorship,” Jegede remarked.
He highlighted the absence of zoning provisions in the party’s constitution, citing past gubernatorial elections where merit, not zoning, determined the outcomes. Jegede stressed the necessity of fostering a conducive environment for the party’s success, acknowledging a pool of competent gubernatorial aspirants ready to contest in the primaries.
“I believe it’s time to afford these individuals the opportunity to vie for the nomination. I pledge my full support to all aspirants and urge unity within the party to ensure a harmonious primary and a triumphant performance in the forthcoming elections,” Jegede affirmed.
Expressing his commitment to resolving the party’s challenges, Jegede called for collective efforts towards rebuilding the PDP for electoral success, urging party members to collaborate with leadership at all levels to facilitate a smooth primary process and a successful election campaign.
