In a bold move to regain market share and attract new customers, MultiChoice Nigeria has announced a 50% reduction in the price of its DStv decoders, marking one of the company’s most significant price cuts in recent years.
The pay-TV giant revealed on Monday that the cost of its HD decoder, dish, and one-month Compact subscription bundle has dropped from ₦18,600 to ₦9,300, effective immediately. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to make satellite television more accessible to a wider segment of Nigerians amid growing competition and changing consumer preferences.
“We understand the economic challenges many of our customers are facing, and we are committed to making quality entertainment more affordable,” said Caroline Oghuma, Executive Head of Corporate Affairs at MultiChoice Nigeria. “This price reduction is aimed at bringing more families into the DStv experience.”
The move comes at a time when streaming services and digital platforms are increasingly challenging traditional satellite TV providers. In addition, economic pressures, including inflation and declining disposable income, have seen many customers downgrade their packages or disconnect entirely.
Industry analysts say the aggressive pricing strategy could help MultiChoice attract new subscribers, particularly in lower-income demographics, while also reviving interest among former customers.
“This is clearly a volume play. The goal is to lower the entry barrier, increase decoder penetration, and make up for it with long-term subscription revenue,” said Uche Obi, a media business analyst based in Lagos.
The company has also hinted at additional incentives, including promotional content bundles and easier payment options, to sweeten the deal for new customers.
However, some critics argue that while the decoder price slash is a welcome development, the real concern for many subscribers remains the cost of monthly subscription packages, which have seen periodic increases in recent years.
