Edo State Commissioner Advocates Increased Federal Funding for Road Infrastructure

Edo State Commissioner for Roads and Bridges, Hon. Ethan Uzamere, has called for an augmented allocation of resources by the federal government for road infrastructure projects in the state. Speaking at a press briefing in Benin City, the Commissioner stressed the strategic importance of Edo State as a major transportation hub connecting various regions of Nigeria.

Highlighting the substantial traffic flow, particularly of articulated vehicles, Hon. Uzamere noted that the state’s roads have endured considerable wear and tear. He specifically addressed the joint efforts of Edo and Delta States in working on the Benin–Asaba Road corridor, emphasizing the misconception that the state government does not contribute to the maintenance of federal roads.

The Commissioner urged the federal government to prioritize Edo State in its road maintenance budgets, considering its crucial role in the national transportation network. While acknowledging the state government’s ongoing efforts to improve road conditions, Hon. Uzamere emphasized the necessity for additional investments to enhance road accessibility and ease congestion.

He detailed specific initiatives, including the construction of new roads and ongoing repairs, with a focus on addressing congestion at Ikpoba Slope in Ikpoba Okha local government area. The Commissioner also highlighted the importance of drainage maintenance to prevent flooding and ensure unrestricted water flow into the Ikpoba River.

Despite the challenges posed by the rising cost of materials, Hon. Uzamere stressed the significance of adhering to high construction standards to ensure the durability of roads in Edo State, emphasizing the need for infrastructure that stands the test of time.
