In a move that signals a potential political divergence, Edo State Deputy Governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu, is set to formally announce his candidacy for the 2024 Edo State governorship election. This decision appears to be at odds with the preferences of his principal, Governor Godwin Obaseki.
Despite indications that Governor Obaseki may not support Shaibu’s bid for the governorship, the deputy governor has been actively engaging in consultations with various political stakeholders and the media. Notably, Shaibu recently held discussions with journalists in Abuja over the weekend.
A close aide to Shaibu revealed, “If everything works according to his plans, he will officially declare his intention next week. He has already secured a campaign office along Airport Road, some of the campaign vehicles have started arriving, and the consultations have reached an advanced stage.”
The source emphasized Shaibu’s confidence in securing the governorship ticket of the PDP, expressing optimism in his ability to navigate the political landscape successfully. According to the aide, Shaibu believes he is well-positioned and equipped to address the challenges of governance when elected as the governor.
