French Ambassador Expelled by Niger Military Junta Amid Diplomatic Tensions

Tensions between the military junta in Niamey and the French government have escalated as the junta, which seized control through a coup on July 26, issued an expulsion order against the French ambassador. The diplomat has been directed to exit Niger within a 48-hour window.

Niger’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed this development in an official statement released on Friday. The ministry cited the ambassador’s refusal to attend a meeting with the minister as the reason behind the decision. Additionally, the statement hinted at other actions by the French government that were deemed detrimental to Niger’s interests, although specifics were not provided.

As of the time of reporting, the French Foreign Affairs Ministry has not officially responded to the expulsion directive.

The relationship between the coup leaders and the French government has been strained, with France openly advocating for the restoration of President Mohamed Bazoum, who was ousted during the coup. Accusations from Niger have also been leveled against French forces, alleging their involvement in freeing captured “terrorists” and violating airspace restrictions, actions seen as attempts to destabilize the country.

Recalling recent events, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) had imposed substantial economic sanctions on Niger in response to the coup. The possibility of employing military force against the junta remains on the table, although ECOWAS remains committed to exploring diplomatic avenues to resolve the crisis and restore constitutional order.

The tension has a backdrop of France’s significant military presence in Niger, consisting of approximately 1,500 troops. These forces have been aiding efforts to combat jihadist groups that have inflicted instability upon both Niger and the broader Sahel region for an extended period. The current diplomatic standoff adds further complexity to the regional dynamics and security landscape.
