In a meeting with a delegation from the European Union (EU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, expressed the commitment of the 10th House to enhance the Electoral Act for better elections in the 2027 general polls. The Speaker highlighted that the House has identified areas in the electoral law that require reinforcement ahead of the upcoming election cycle.
During the meeting with the EU delegation led by EU Ambassador to Nigeria, Ms Samuela Isopi, in Abuja on Thursday, Speaker Abbas Tajudeen emphasized the importance of a thorough review of the current Electoral Act to yield improved outcomes in the 2027 elections. He assured that the House, under his leadership, would work diligently to pass legislation encouraging increased participation of women and youth in politics and governance.
“I want to assure you that the 2027 election will be a better election than the 2023. And the laws that we are going to review would be the best for this country,” stated Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, expressing gratitude to the EU for its ongoing support to the Nigerian government and Parliament since 1999.
Speaker Tajudeen informed the EU delegation that the 10th House has established about 15 friendship groups for EU countries and revealed plans to set up a dedicated one for the EU and its Parliament. He highlighted the House’s efforts in addressing women’s interests by increasing the number of standing committees related to women from one to two, specifically the Committee on Women Affairs and the Committee on Women in Parliament.
Recognizing the challenges faced by women in Nigerian politics, Speaker Tajudeen emphasized the need for additional support for women in emerging as candidates and winning elections. He shared his vision for reelecting women in the 2027 elections and beyond, emphasizing the importance of showcasing them as role models to inspire aspiring female legislators.
Ambassador Isopi, during the meeting, raised concerns related to women in politics and governance, electoral reforms, and inter-parliamentary relations. She reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting democracy in Nigeria and expressed willingness to provide assistance in electoral reforms, women’s representation, and inter-parliamentary collaborations, considering the National Assembly as a key partner in this endeavor.
