IGP Egbetokun Disburses N15.6 Billion to Families of Deceased Police Officers

Abuja, Nigeria – Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, announced on Tuesday that a total of N15.6 billion has been disbursed to 5,225 family members and next of kin of deceased police officers between 2023 and 2024. The funds are part of efforts to provide financial support to families who lost loved ones in the line of duty.

During a cheque presentation ceremony in Abuja, Egbetokun revealed that N9.85 billion had already been distributed to 3,077 families in six separate ceremonies between July 2023 and June 2024. An additional N5.75 billion was disbursed to the families of other fallen officers at Tuesday’s event.

Speaking at the ceremony, Egbetokun said, “We will be presenting cheques totalling N5,754,290,486.38 to the families of deceased police officers who have selflessly given their lives in service of our great nation, Nigeria.”

The disbursement covers insurance payments for policies ranging from 2018-2019 through to 2023-2024, marking the largest payout in the history of cheque presentations to the next of kin of fallen officers.

Egbetokun emphasized the force’s dedication to easing the burden on families affected by the loss of police personnel. He also reiterated his commitment to the welfare of serving officers, highlighting the efforts of the police insurance unit to ensure timely settlement of claims.

“As we honour our fallen heroes, we also renew our commitment to the safety and well-being of the officers who continue to serve,” Egbetokun stated. “The current management of the force remains steadfast in its dedication to prioritising the welfare of our personnel.”

In appreciation, Cecilia Christopher, who spoke on behalf of the beneficiaries, commended the Inspector General for his support. She urged the police force to assist children of deceased officers in securing employment, noting that many are jobless despite graduating from university.

“This money will go a long way to train our children in school,” Christopher said. “I want the Inspector General of Police to help our children whenever they are looking for a job.”

The disbursement ceremony reflects the police force’s continued effort to support the families of its fallen officers, ensuring they receive compensation and assistance in difficult times.
