Israel Adesanya Shares Journey to Professional Fighting, Offers Candid Advice to Aspiring Athletes

Lagos, Nigeria—Nigerian-born UFC star Israel Adesanya has opened up about the motivations that led him to pursue a career as a professional fighter, while offering words of wisdom to aspiring athletes. The “Last Stylebender” shared his insights during a visit to a Celestial Church of Christ service in Lagos, where he also discussed the significance of faith in his life and career.

Adesanya, who attended the service dressed in traditional Celestial garments, revealed that his journey into fighting began as a way to defend himself. He explained that his decision to become a professional fighter came after realizing his natural talent in the sport.

“When I started fighting, it was just about standing up for myself,” Adesanya said. “As I continued, I realized I was good at it and decided to make it my career. Thankfully, it has worked out well so far.”

The UFC star also highlighted the crucial role his father played in his career. “I wouldn’t have become a fighter without my father’s support,” he noted, acknowledging the influence of his family in his rise to prominence.

When asked about the role of faith in his life, Adesanya emphasized its importance beyond just his career. “Faith is something you have to have in this life. You can’t walk by sight; you have to walk by faith,” he said. “Faith has guided me through my life, not just in my career. I trust in myself, in a higher power, and in who I am.”

Adesanya, known for his rigorous training regimen, explained that faith complements his physical preparation. “I prepare for my fights through training and hard work, but sometimes you don’t know what the outcome will be. That’s where faith comes in—it helps me in all parts of my life.”

In a message to aspiring athletes, Adesanya advised against simply following in his footsteps. “Don’t try to copy what I’ve done,” he urged. “Create your path. Draw inspiration from what I’ve achieved, but use it to propel yourself in your own direction. Trying to replicate someone else’s journey isn’t worth it. Instead, take inspiration and apply it to your life.”

Adesanya’s visit to Lagos was marked by a warm reception from fans, despite his recent loss at UFC 305 to South African fighter Dricus Du Plessis. The mixed martial arts star, who arrived in Lagos last Wednesday, has been seen enjoying the city’s vibrant nightlife, including a visit to a popular club on Lagos Island.

Adesanya’s return to Nigeria also included a visit to his hometown of Esa-Oke in Osun State, where he was welcomed as a hero. Despite his loss to Du Plessis in the UFC 305 main event—a historic bout as the first-ever title clash between two African fighters—Adesanya reportedly earned more than the reigning champion, with a guaranteed purse of $750,000 compared to Du Plessis’ $500,000.

The bout, held at the RAC Arena in Perth, Australia, saw Du Plessis successfully defend his UFC Middleweight Championship, forcing Adesanya to tap out in the fourth round. The fight was a significant moment in UFC history, showcasing the growing influence of African fighters on the global stage.
