Jonathan Stresses the Need to Move Forward After Supreme Court Verdict, Following Visit to Tinubu

Former President Goodluck Jonathan emphasized the importance of progressing as a nation after the Supreme Court’s validation of President Bola Tinubu’s electoral victory. Jonathan made this statement while briefing journalists at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa following his meeting with Tinubu.

He conveyed, “There are certain things we discussed that the country must move forward. Elections are over, we must move forward.”

Jonathan acknowledged the existing economic challenges but expressed confidence in Nigeria’s capacity to lead. He noted that he would continue to engage in discussions with the President, including providing updates on his foreign engagements, as they pertain to national interests rather than personal matters.

The visit occurred shortly after the Supreme Court’s verdict, providing Jonathan with the opportunity to congratulate President Tinubu on the judgment. Jonathan emphasized the need to alleviate tensions and work together for the country’s progress, especially as Africa’s most populous nation.

Jonathan called on all political leaders, past and present, to put aside bitterness and collaborate harmoniously for the greater good of the nation. He also used the visit to inform Tinubu about his recent foreign engagements and discuss various issues affecting the country.

He explained, “Traditionally, when a former president represents the country in continental, regional, or international matters, they return home and brief the current President. This is the tradition. Most of the time, when you see me here, it is because of the responsibilities we must fulfill to advance Nigeria, ECOWAS, and the African continent.”
