In the aftermath of a stakeholders meeting held at the Kano State police headquarters, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in collaboration with the Police and other security agencies, has announced their preparedness for the upcoming supplementary election scheduled for February 3, 2024, in the state.
The supplementary elections will specifically focus on the rerun elections in three constituencies: Kunchi/Tsanyawa, Kura/Garunmalam, and Tofa/Rimin Gado, encompassing six local governments. The necessity for these rerun elections arose from Appeal Court verdicts affecting the mentioned constituencies.
During a joint press conference, Kano State’s INEC commissioner, Amb. Abdu Zango, informed the media that the training of adhoc staff is already underway in the state. He assured that both sensitive and nonsensitive materials are readily available, emphasizing the commitment to ensuring a free, fair, and credible election in a secure environment.
Zango explained that National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) members will serve as adhoc field workers, while university professors will act as Returning Officers, maintaining the standard procedure.
Commissioner of Police Mohammed Usain Gumel, in response, outlined that comprehensive security strategies have been implemented. He clarified that only federal government security agencies would be involved in providing the necessary security for the exercise. Gumel stated, “The Vigilante and similar other security outfits are not going to be part of this election, ensuring that the provision of security during the election will strictly be done by the police and other security agencies recognized by the law.”
With an assurance of support from the national headquarters and the readiness of the police force, Gumel expressed confidence in the security arrangements, affirming that the upcoming election would proceed smoothly, drawing on the experience and resources available.
