Senator Lola Ashiru, the deputy Senate leader and representative of Kwara South senatorial district in the National Assembly, declared that the 2027 governorship race in the state would not consider zoning arrangements. During an interview at his Offa country home, the All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker emphasized that the governorship position would be open to contestants from all three zones in the state.
Ashiru dismissed the notion that zoning arrangements had ever played a role in selecting governorship candidates in Kwara State. He asserted that the position was not zoned, and any aspirant aspiring for the role must be prepared to work hard, campaign effectively, and convince the electorate.
While expressing sympathy for Kwara North, Ashiru acknowledged that it had been a long time since the region produced a governor. However, he emphasized that historical governorships from Kwara North, such as that of Governor Sha’aba Lafiagi, were not based on zoning but on the individual’s efforts and campaigns.
Ashiru highlighted the importance of negotiation, bargaining, and political engagement in the electoral process. He emphasized that candidates must approach communities, including his own in Offa, and outline what they have to offer to the people of Kwara State.
The deputy Senate Leader pointed to the recent elections, including Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s victory, stating that they were not based on zoning but on the candidates’ ability to connect with the people and deliver on promises. Ashiru urged aspiring candidates to present their plans and offerings to the people of Kwara State, emphasizing that positions are not predetermined but earned through merit and preparation.
He acknowledged Governor Abdulrazaq’s efforts in spreading dividends of democracy across the state but insisted that Kwara South deserved more. While recognizing the right of politicians to campaign for the 2027 elections, Ashiru indicated that he would not personally involve himself in the early campaign activities.
