Kwara State House of Assembly Passes Six Bills and 30 Motions in Nine Months

In the past nine months, the Kwara State House of Assembly has successfully passed six bills and 30 motions, according to Barr. Abdulkadir Oba Magaji, the leader of the House. Magaji revealed this during an interview with LEADERSHIP in Ilorin, the state capital.

The 10th state House of Assembly commenced its activities in June 2023 following a proclamation from Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

Among the bills passed are the Rural Access Road Law, Local Government Electoral Law (Amendment), Environmental Law (Amendment), Education Trust Fund Law (Amendment), 2024 Appropriation Law, and another bill. Magaji noted that Governor AbdulRazaq assented to these bills after they were passed on the floor of the state House of Assembly.

“We have passed about six bills, including ones concerning rural access roads, rural agency, the 2024 appropriation bill, and amendments to the local government electoral law, environmental law, and trust fund law. These bills have been signed into law by the Executive Governor of Kwara State. Additionally, we are in the process of passing the RUWASSA law,” stated the House leader.

Magaji highlighted the significant impact of the motions passed by the Assembly, numbering between 28 and 30, which he said have positively affected the people of Kwara State.

Addressing environmental concerns, Magaji explained that amendments were made to the state environmental law to ensure appropriate penalties for environmental offenses. He emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing environmental issues effectively and supported the increase in fines for offenders.

“The amendment to the Environmental Law includes increasing the penalty for offenders, particularly for indiscriminate dumping of refuse. Formerly, the penalty ranged from N1,000 to N5,000, but now it ranges from N50,000 to N100,000. This underscores the seriousness with which the government of Kwara State is tackling environmental pollution,” Magaji stated, noting that the bill was an executive initiative that has been enacted into law.
