The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has announced its readiness to join the indefinite nationwide strike called for by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), scheduled to commence on Tuesday, 3rd October 2023.
In a circular issued on Friday and signed by the Deputy Secretary of MWUN, Comrade Oniha Erazua, the union declared its intention to mobilize its members across all four branches to bring port operations nationwide to a halt.
The circular further called upon members to initiate the mobilization of officials at the Branches, Districts, and Units levels to ensure full compliance with the directives of the NLC.
These actions follow the NLC’s determination to proceed with the strike, despite the directive of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), instructing members, including Petroleum Tanker Drivers, Petrol Stations Workers, Liquefied Petroleum Gas Retailers, and all other related workers in the petroleum products distribution chain, to adhere to the strike directive.
Members from the four branches, including NPA, Shipping, Dockworkers, Seaman, and NIWA Water Transport, have previously called on the government to provide relief measures for workers in the maritime industry, but their appeals have gone unanswered.
