Nigerians and Other Africans Seek Protection from Hunger, Poverty: Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has emphasized the desire of Nigerians and other Africans to be shielded from hunger, poverty, and deprivation. Speaking at the second Kenneth Kaunda Memorial Public Lecture in Pretoria, South Africa, Jonathan highlighted the importance of accountable leadership in addressing these pressing concerns.

Jonathan expressed his concern over the prevailing conflicts and undemocratic governments in various African nations, including Sudan, Ethiopia, Libya, Chad, Mali, Guinea, and Burkina Faso. Additionally, he acknowledged the tensions and attempted coup d’états in other countries.

Reflecting on these challenges, Jonathan posed the question of the underlying causes behind such crises. He stressed the significance of citizen participation and collective efforts in nation-building, emphasizing the need for peace, justice, and security. African citizens aspire to live in a society free from hunger, poverty, and deprivation, and they desire accountable leadership that safeguards their rights.

The former president highlighted the detrimental role that leadership plays in conflicts and wars across the continent. He attributed these challenges to flaws in the leadership recruitment process and the inadequate management of political transitions. Elections, in some instances, have become a source of instability, reflecting the quality of leaders in power.

Jonathan called upon fellow Africans to redefine leadership and governance on the continent. He emphasized the necessity of a leadership process that upholds the fundamental freedoms and rights of citizens and ensures a good quality of life. Building and protecting political systems to serve the best interests of the people is crucial. Managing diversity and fostering inclusivity are also vital for the progress of African societies.

Jonathan’s remarks underscore the collective aspiration for a better future in Africa, where hunger, poverty, and deprivation are alleviated through effective governance and accountable leadership.
