A coalition comprising opposition political parties, operating under the banner of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), has raised concerns over an alleged conspiracy to exploit the judicial system for the unwarranted impeachment of Rivers State Governor, Sim Fubara.
The coalition disclosed that it possesses intelligence indicating the existence of a pre-drafted ruling from the Federal High Court, scheduled for delivery on Monday. The ruling purportedly declares that the seats of 25 former Rivers State lawmakers, who recently defected from the PDP to the APC, cannot be deemed vacant.
This development, according to CUPP’s national secretary, Peter Ameh, contradicts a previous High Court ruling in Rivers State that recognized Edison Ehie as the legitimate Speaker of the House. Ameh, speaking at a press conference in Abuja, expressed concern that such a ruling would empower the pro-Wike faction to assume control of the State Assembly and proceed with Governor Fubara’s impeachment within a 10-day timeframe.
Referring to the overnight filing of the alleged suit as a “kangaroo ruling,” Ameh emphasized the threat it poses to democracy. He urged Nigerians to protest at the Federal High Court on Monday, warning of potential anarchy in Rivers State if the plot succeeds. Additionally, he called upon President Bola Tinubu and heads of security agencies to safeguard state institutions, expressing fears that the orchestrated plan could lead to a crisis affecting oil production and causing economic instability.
Ameh stressed the need for public scrutiny to ensure transparency and prevent what the coalition termed as judicial manipulation. He asserted that this alleged plan, if executed, would mark the end of Nigeria’s democracy, urging President Tinubu to intervene in the interest of the nation.
In conclusion, Ameh demanded that the heads of security agencies stay clear of political interference and ensure the protection of government institutions, particularly in Rivers State. The coalition reiterated its commitment to democracy and warned against any negative consequences for the nation’s budding democratic system.
