Ride-Hailing Workers, Including Bolt, Uber, GidiCab, InDriver, and LagRide, Threaten Indefinite Strike

The Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transport Workers of Nigeria (AUATWON) has issued a warning of an indefinite strike due to the failure of app-based companies to engage in negotiations and meet their demands.

In a statement by AUATWON’s spokesperson, Jossy Olawale, the union expressed disappointment in the companies’ lack of response, despite a seven-day ultimatum issued on June 9 to facilitate dialogue.

The union highlighted that instead of the requested 200% increase in fare trips to offset the impact of the 300% surge in fuel prices, the companies only implemented a 40% fare increase, which fell short of their expectations.

The demand for a 50% reduction in companies’ commissions was also unmet, as the commission rates for drivers actually increased by 25%, further exacerbating the financial burden caused by the fuel price hike.

AUATWON has reached out to relevant stakeholders, including the Federal Ministry of Labour, Nigerian Bar Association, and Nigeria Labour Congress, seeking their assistance in facilitating a productive dialogue to address the challenges faced by app-based transport workers.

The union emphasized its commitment to upholding the law and acting in the best interest of customers who heavily rely on their services. They remain hopeful that the dialogue process, expected to take place in the coming week, will yield positive outcomes for all parties involved.

Furthermore, the union urged the government to prioritize the needs of app-based transport workers in its relief plans aimed at mitigating the effects of fuel subsidy removal. They also called for the establishment of a regulatory framework for the industry and the provision of special grants or loans for car financing to support their members.

In addition, AUATWON appealed to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to intervene promptly regarding the acquisition of LagRide and to address the deteriorating conditions of service and welfare for drivers, which the union believes have undermined the governor’s goals of empowerment and job creation.

AUATWON’s demands include a 200% increase in fare trips, a 50% reduction in companies’ commissions, and the proper profiling of riders, among other requests.
