Senate Urges Ondo Government to Address Flooding Crisis

The Senate on Tuesday, October 8, called on the Ondo State government to conduct an urgent assessment of the recurring flooding issues in the region to find a lasting solution.

In addition, the Senate urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to promptly mobilize relief materials for those displaced by the recent devastating floods in the Ondo West Local Government Area. They also appealed to the Federal Ministry of Power to ensure that the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) restores electricity supply to the affected areas.

These resolutions came after the Senate considered a motion titled “The Recent Devastating Flood That Caused Widespread Destruction in Ondo West Local Government Area,” sponsored by Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire SAN (APC – Ondo Central).

During the debate, Senator Adegbonmire expressed deep concern over the impact of the floods, noting that “no fewer than 1,000 homes, 25 schools, and 20 worship centers have been affected, displacing over 7,000 people.” The heavy rainfall on October 4, 2024, caused significant damage across multiple communities in Ondo Central Senatorial District.

He highlighted the affected areas, including Itanla, Oka, Odojomu, Oke-Odunwo, and several others within the Ondo West Local Government Area. The senator lamented the severe consequences of this natural disaster, particularly on vulnerable populations such as women, children, and the elderly. Reports indicated that some children went missing and property worth millions of naira was destroyed, leaving many residents homeless.

Senator Adegbonmire noted the profound hardship inflicted on the communities, stressing the urgent need for government action to ensure the welfare and security of the people, as mandated by Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria.
