Jos, Plateau State, and its environs are shrouded in an uneasy calm ahead of Friday’s anticipated verdict from the Supreme Court concerning the governorship battle between the incumbent governor, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and his arch-rival, Nentawe Yitwatda of the All Progressive Congress (APC).
While the roads witness the usual hustle and bustle with motorists going about their daily routines, a palpable tension fills the air as individuals converge in markets, shops, and at newspaper stands engaging in discussions and debates over the potential outcome of the Supreme Court’s judgment tomorrow.
Supporters of the APC and PDP have resorted to fervent prayers, seeking divine intervention for a decisive victory. The Chairman of the PDP, Plateau State Chapter, Hon. Chris Hassan, has called on party members to observe prayers and fasting in anticipation of a favorable judgment. In a statement issued in Jos, Hassan expressed confidence in divine intervention, emphasizing that their mandate would be affirmed by divine grace.
On the other hand, the APC in Plateau State has appealed to its members, supporters, and well-wishers to maintain calmness and refrain from actions contrary to the principles of decorum and peace, regardless of the Supreme Court’s decision. The party, in a statement signed by the state publicity secretary, Sylvanus Namang, reiterated its commitment to respecting the rule of law and expressed readiness to accept the outcome in good faith.
Namang urged security agencies to be extra vigilant in upholding law and order. Emphasizing the party’s dedication to constitutionalism and the rule of law, the statement underscored the importance of these principles for democracy and good governance.
Similarly, former Senator Jeremiah Timbut Useni, representing Plateau South, urged the people of Plateau, both within and outside the PDP, to remain calm and law-abiding. Regardless of the judgment’s direction, Useni emphasized the paramount interest of maintaining peace and unity in Plateau State. He called on political leaders to refrain from dishonorable practices that undermine democratic principles within the political party system.
