President Bola Tinubu has given the green light to the establishment of the transformative Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI), a groundbreaking endeavor set to reshape the transportation landscape in Nigeria. This initiative aims to introduce more than 11,500 new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-enabled vehicles and deploy 55,000 CNG conversion kits for existing gasoline-dependent vehicles. In addition to these advancements, the initiative will foster local manufacturing, assembly, and a surge in job opportunities, aligning with the directive set forth by the President.
At its core, the PCNGI encompasses a Comprehensive Adoption Strategy, which encompasses several key components. The Empowering Workshops Programme, along with a nationwide network of workshops, stands out as crucial focal points. This strategy is anticipated to begin by targeting mass transit systems and student hubs, ultimately leading to reduced transit costs for the general public in the short term.
To ensure a seamless integration of CNG utility within the current energy value chain, the PCNGI will establish workshops across all states and geopolitical zones. These workshops will offer essential kits and comprehensive training for newly employed staff, paving the way for technical skill development and increased employment opportunities for Nigerians.
One of the prominent objectives of the PCNGI is the development of stakeholder-operated Intrastate Mass Transit systems founded on CNG. The initiative will also support states in integrating CNG buses into their Intrastate Mass Transit networks through various methods such as wholesale conversion, retro-fitting, and new purchases. Additionally, private mass transit operators will have the opportunity to deploy CNG buses, facilitated by innovative asset finance programs.
Furthermore, the initiative aims to incentivize investments in CNG processing, distribution, and utilization by offering enhanced investment opportunities and partnerships. The focus on assembling CNG-enabled vehicles domestically holds the potential to stimulate economic growth, bolster local employment, and strengthen the nation’s automotive manufacturing capacities.
