Oyo Court Jails Two Influencers Over Naira Mutilation Offence

A Magistrate Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, has convicted and sentenced two popular social media influencers for the abuse and mutilation of the Nigerian currency, the Naira, in violation of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act.

The court found the defendants, whose online antics often attract thousands of followers, guilty of spraying and trampling on Naira notes at a public event, an act captured in a viral video that prompted public outrage and a swift investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Magistrate Kehinde Akintola delivered the judgment on Tuesday, describing the actions of the influencers as “reckless, unlawful, and capable of undermining the dignity of the national currency.” The duo were sentenced to six months imprisonment with an option of a ₦200,000 fine each.

The prosecution, led by EFCC counsel Barr. Ifeoma Okoye, argued that the act contravened Section 21(3) of the CBN Act 2007, which criminalizes the abuse of the Naira.

“This judgment sends a strong message that the law does not condone the defacing or misuse of the national currency, regardless of one’s social status or online following,” Okoye stated after the verdict.

The influencers, identified as Teniola Ayeni (popularly known as “Teni Gold”) and Adekunle Benson (“Benny Vibes”), had pleaded for leniency, claiming ignorance of the law and expressing remorse for their actions.

Reactions to the ruling have been mixed on social media, with some users applauding the court for upholding the law, while others questioned whether the punishment fits the offense.

The Central Bank of Nigeria has in recent months intensified its campaign against Naira abuse, especially during weddings, parties, and other social events where currency spraying is common.

Legal experts say the ruling could set a precedent as authorities crack down on influencers and celebrities who violate the law in public and online spaces.
