A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Emmanuel Ogidi, has expressed confidence that politicians who recently left the party will eventually return.
Ogidi made the remark on Wednesday during a live programme on Trust TV, where he addressed the wave of defections from the PDP to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He particularly referenced the defection of the Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, who is reported to be among the latest high-profile figures to exit the opposition party.
Questioning the rationale behind such moves, Ogidi wondered why a sitting governor, expected to exercise autonomy in administering his state, would feel compelled to align with the party at the centre.
When asked whether Fintiri had criticised the PDP before his departure, Ogidi described him as a gentleman who refrained from speaking negatively about the party prior to leaving.
He further lamented what he described as troubling developments within Nigeria’s political landscape, suggesting that the country’s democratic practice is under strain.
Despite the ongoing defections, Ogidi maintained that some of those who left the PDP would ultimately retrace their steps and rejoin the party.
